Sony announces PlayStation Classic
In a surprising turn of events, SONY announced this morning the release of PlayStation classic “Featuring Final Fantasy VII, Tekken 3, Wild Arms and 17 other legendary titles, at an MSRP of $99.99.”.
Adding to the number of “Classic” consoles we have been seeing popping up lately, with Nintendo’s classic NES and classic SNES having been released over a year ago, SONY seems to already be losing at this race. The MSRP of $99.99 does not include the AC adapter and this will add at least a few bucks to your MSRP.
A fanbase divided
Fans seem divided on the matter, with one half being overly excited for the new relaunch and the other half being utterly disappointed. The reasons for disappointment seem to be both the price point for the console, as well as the currently underwhelming titles that have been announced.
According to SONY “The mini console is approximately 45% smaller than the original PlayStation, and it emulates the original’s look and feel by featuring similar controllers and packaging. Long-time fans will appreciate the nostalgia that comes with rediscovering the games they know and love, while gamers who might be new to the platform can enjoy the groundbreaking PlayStation console experience that started it all. All of the pre-loaded games will be playable in their original format.”.
Strike one the price, Strike two the controllers?
It should be noted that the controllers that are displayed as included in the console are the original controllers, without analog controls. This is going to be a big issue, as many titles are nearly unplayable without the analog sticks, but it will all boil down to the final title lineup.
The final title lineup is to be determined at a later date, with SONY stating asking fans to “stay tuned to the Blog for the full lineup of titles coming to PlayStation Classic.”
The release date has been determined as December 3, 2018, so we still have some time to make up our mind about this release.
