Tussle Association: Grimm off

One is a movie, the other is a series of books written by supposedly two brothers! Today we pit them together to see what happens! We will judge the contestants based on:

A) Story
B) Reception
C) Fame
D) Educational Value

Many of you may wonder what the hell have I been smoking to make those Tussles. Others may need more than just one Tussle a week.
Take heart my friends, for as long as those articles keep the demons at bay, they will keep on coming!

The Brothers Grimm

A movie that was not exactly a success but also not a flop. With an amazingly powerful cast featuring the likes of Matt Damon, Heath Ledger, Queen Cerse..I mean Lena Headey and Monica Belucci, I remember the movie being universally pummeled by everyone I knew. Yet, when I saw the movie as I recovered from surgery, I found myself liking it to the extend of watching it a good number of times. Is the movie truly a visionary idea trying to find a purpose? Or is it just a great big mess? LETS SEE HOW IT DOES IN THE RING:

Story: 7/10: Set in German occupied France in the early 19th century, we follow the Brothers Grimm, the same ones who supposedly wrote the books, who turned out to be con-artists, preying on the superstition of the common folk and the various folklore to earn a pretty penny. Things change however, when one of the villages that invite them to help their town with the supernatural threat, turns out to have an actual supernatural threat. How could they have gone wrong with that idea you might ask? Simply put, the movie seems to go around in circles and more often than not it seems to not know what it wants to do with itself. Despite all that however, it still manages to be entertaining and at least coherent enough for us to enjoy.

Reception: 4/10: The movie was -destroyed- when it came to reviews and critiques. Sure it might have a 51% rate by most reviewers, but the general viewing crowd and anyone I asked about watching this film told me to stay away. People more knowledgeable than me have discussed the reasons behind this, so here is the wikipedia page for you guys to read if you are curious.

Fame: 1/10: The movie faded to shadow unfortunately. The very fact that most of the people that are going to read this, are most likely unaware this movie even existed (and I would too if I did not have so many surgeries in my life) is proof enough for the score.

Educational Value: 9/10: For all the wrong reasons. This movie serves as a testament that despite having an amazing theme, great visuals and a clear "vibe" a director is going for, it all falls flat when the movie itself has no purpose. Without a doubt, with the cast, set and visuals this movie had, it would have been an amazing movie if only the plot was better.

Brothers Grimm.

With pictures that are creepier than their stories, the German academics collected and published German and European folklore which was up to that point passed down verbally from one generation to the next. As a major Mythology connoisseur I have to say that their work is invaluable to the preservation of the folklore and beliefs of central Europe during that time. With their work tainted as it was used as propaganda by the Third Reich, the value of their work was thankfully reaffirmed later in the 20th century by numerous psychiatrists like Bruno Bettelheim, despite their violent nature. But, will that save them from the FURY OF THE TUSSLE? Lets find out!

A) Story: 3/10. Lets be honest here folks, "Traveled in Europe to collect fairytales" is not much of an exciting tale.

B) Reception: 9/10. Once the value of their work was reaffirmed in the 20th century, edited versions of their fairy tales have enjoyed great popularity. From Disney popularizing some of those fairy tales and many of them enjoying adaptations in theater and books, there is not a single person in the Western World that does not know at -least- 5 of their stories.

C) Fame: 10/10. Like mentioned above, though the Brothers Grimm may not be the originators or authors of many popular fairy tales, the very fact that their name is associated with the modern renditions we know of them says a lot.

D) Educational Value: 10/10. I have said so many times, and I will continue saying it forever. Fantasy and fairy tales are important. Even the original more violent versions of those stories have served as educational cautionary tales throughout the ages. Making adult values and lessons more easy to understand by children, fairy tales serve and should continue to serve as first forms of passing down morals and lessons to the next generations.

And The Winner Is:

Aesop

GET REKT! The original "ima collect a bunch of fables and publish them" guy, this sly mofo is responsible for so many anthropomorphic animal stories he might as well gave birth to the entire Furry culture.

With his origins debated (as usual for things that date before Jesus) this man wrote put the fables into Fables, and brought to us some amazingly famous stories (like the turtle and the hare). Sadly as with all pre Jesus people, his entire work has been published, lost, found, lost again, refound, republished etc etc.

Lacking the gory and dark themes, these simple fables are entertaining, educational and a fun read for all ages!
