Gargoyles

One of the best shows ever growing up as a kid in the 90’s into a video game? Sign. Me. Up. But does it hold on to the hype, or at least the name of this iconic series?

WTF are Gargoyles

With one of the most epic introductions to a kid’s show since X-Men, Gargoyles was one of the best original franchises of cartoons in the 90’s, hands down. With its dark, gothic fantasy mythos, interesting characters and good voice acting, Gargoyles did the unimaginable. It managed to climb up the top list of cartoons, in an era dominated by Marvel’s X-Men and Spiderman animated series, DC’s Batman the animated series and off course the classics such as Dragonball Z and Thundercats.

The story, revolves around Goliath, the mythological version of Ron Swanson, and his tribe of Gargoyles, who are mythological beasts that turn to statues by day, but come to life at dusk. Protectors of a castle somewhere in Scotlland, they were betrayed by the humans they were protecting and through a series of events, they re-awoke in Manhattan by a mysterious billionaire with a ponytail even Steven Seagal would envy.

Trying to figure out their place in this new world as well as uncover various schemes and plots, they would end up befriending and co-operating with detective Elisa Maza of the NYPD.

Great action, great characters, great show. Eventually as was the fate of those franchises, toys began to pop around, and eventually a video game was released as an exclusive to the Sega Genesis

The Video Game

The video game, very loosely follows the plot of the series, as you take the wheel as Goliath and fight your way through various enemies while trying to destroy the Eye of Odin, a cursed artifact.

With pretty damn good graphics for its era, good controls and amazing artwork, the game was both difficult and fun to play. Me and my brother spent hours upon hours trying to beat the game, but I remember that as kids we barelly made it past the third level (out of I think 11).

With design, artwork and music to tie into the feel of the show, it was one of those rare video games that drew you in and felt as part of the series instead of just some cheap cash grab.

Hands down a solid must for any fan of good ol’ games, I -highly- reccomend playing it. It manages to hold up, even for today, at least in entertainment value

Closing Words

With so many cartoons with dark themes and some rocking intro’s it comes to no surprise that many kids in the 90’s grew up to be Rock music lovers and fantasy book enhusiasts. Gargoyles was a beloved show and an equally amazing video game, both which should be on your “list” to give a go.
