Croc: The Legend of Gobbos

One of the most underrated platformers of the Playstation Era, Croc: The Legend of Gobbos, is a wonderful game that easily can stand on its own in an era where Spyro and Crash dominated the scene. With a surprisingly likable non-speaking protagonist, colorful graphics and fun level design and a highly sexy soundtrack this game is well worth your time.

Gameplay

Not the strong suit of the game. The gameplay, though not horrible, it is not at all as responsive and fluid as it could/should be. That said however, the game overall makes up for it, for rather forgiving levels and enemies, and with interesting puzzles that make up for the lacking gameplay.

With 4 overworlds and a fifth "bonus" one, the game features surprising variety in its level design and puzzle approaches. From caves to meadows, the frozen arctic to the scorching deserts, the game never feels repetitive, which is much more than what most games around that time could say.

One of the things I particularly liked, is that even though you have the usual collect X amount of items to fully complete each level/game, the way the game challenges you in order to get those items is both fun, thematic and to be quite honest, not -that- hard. Personally I hated it when I needed a guide to get to those items.

Croc's gameplay is fun, exciting and the occasional gimmick never overstays its welcome.

Music and Sound

One of the top qualities of the game, the music is funky and cheerful. With surprising variations for each level and area, the music and sounds are not only annoying but actually quite fun. It is one of the few games from Playstation I not only did not mute, in favor of my own music, but actually found myself lingering around certain areas just for the music.

Aside from that there is not much else to say. Sound effects were ok, nothing to write home about. The Gobbos are understandably adorable and even our protagonist's noises are quite endearing.

If I had one complaint that would be the lack of a remaster, at least for the soundtrack

Final Thoughts

Croc: Legend of the Gobbos is a fun platformer. With a simple story, memorable villains, fun sound effects and amazing music. Without a doubt, one of my favorite games growing up from the Playstation era.

Despite all of the above, Croc did not seem to be that popular, which is truly a shame, because it is a truly great game. My advice? Play the game, listen to the soundtrack, have some fun!
