Tussle Association Goes Sci-Fi

Its getting all futuristic in here folks! With the 4th of May, international Star Wars day, just a week ago, it makes sense to finally settle the argument once and for all. They have loyal fans bordering to fanatics, they are esteemed and established science fiction franchises, but only one can reign supreme! Our contestants are going to be judged based on

A: The Plot

B: The Action

C: The Setting

D: The Science

So lets see who rules the stars!

Star Wars

From the mind of George Lucas, this film has established itself due to the numerous controversies, innovations and, off course, the many years it has been running, Star Wars is without a doubt one of the most famous and, as some would say, best sci-fi franchises out there. With it's share of controversy, earning the ire of fans and the general public alike, is it truly the best out there? We will find out!

The Plot: 7/10. The first trilogy had a simple hero's journey, the second was a jumbled mess and the third, appears to be roughly along the lines of Good VS Evil. Sure, their stories are by no stretch unique or particularly well written, but most of the movies are solid, entertaining and ultimately damn fun to watch, even the infamous "prequels".

The Action: 10/10. I mean lets be real, if there is ONE thing the Star Wars franchise does well it is the action. Fast paced, engaging, rooted enough on reality to be convincing but taking enough liberties to fascinate and "enchant" the audiences, it is top notch. Even the god-awful prequels do this right and properly. Without a doubt, amazing action.

The Setting: 9/10. Admittedly the idea of all of Star Wars happening in a galaxy far far away some time ago, is genius. It give it a sense of much needed realism and makes for a unique spin on technology and alien life. Why not 10? Because ultimately, with the frequent changes of themes and scenery between the trilogies its hard to get a solid hold of how the world is -exactly-

The Science: 3/10. We are talking space wizards doing acrobatic kung fu fighting sequences with swords of light. Yes, it has -some- things rooted in reality, but all in all, it is -not- aimed to be realistic. Case in point: The Force. Next!

Star Trek

A television series that swiftly rose to popularity among fans of science fiction, Star Trek takes us in an age in the future where humanity has rose to the stars, has joined a federation of alien species and basically enjoy peace within their borders. In Star Trek we view the life inside ships which is supposed to be an exploration vessel, but lets be honest, its a little bit of everything. With interesting characters, unique races, and a simple premise of "we explore and learn things about the universe", is it really worth all the fuss?

The Plot: 6/10. Lets be honest, it is not exactly the plot that is pushing the Star Trek universe forward, it is instead the characters and the interactions between them. Even so, their stories are well written, entertaining, fun and they offer enough of a base for the characters to interact and develop

The Action: 9/10. This is a tricky one. The action is a lot more slow paced, as you basically mostly see a group of people sitting around shouting commands and details one to another, with the occasional shake of a hit. Yet, the action is super engaging. Because it is based on logic and tries to be as realistic as possible, it manages to capture the intensity of ship to ship combat through the actions, voices and behavior of the actors, rather than cinematic effects.

The Setting: 10/10. The setting is simple but it works perfectly. It is small (a ship) and it allows the time to be spent in focusing on what is important, the story, the characters, the intrigue. It all ties in perfectly and makes up for a great view.

The Science: 9/10. Sure, it may stretch what we can perceive as logical and even do-able via science, but in its core, Star Trek marries the logical with the emotional, the scientific and the spiritual in ways that are truly unique.

And The Winner Is!

Star Trek

I am sorry my Star Wars fans, but in all honesty, if I have to choose between Star Trek and Star Wars, I will choose Star Trek hands down.
The reason is simple, despite it being a very close match, I have found that Star Trek has a consistent quality about it that Star Wars simply lacks.

Favoring logic, science and a focus on the interactions between people than the mystical machinations of some order or another. Yes, it may not be as flashy as Star Wars, yes, it may not be as visually appealing (though that is debatable) as Star Wars, but all in all, I find myself drawn to the consistent good quality of Star Trek, over the fickle nature of Star Wars.
